Fixed-Odds Gambling
Fixed-odds gambling is a type of non-casino gambling that depends on luck and a good calculation of chances. There is a bookmarker that determines a certain value, or certain odds, and a person places his bet against this value. This is commonly found in games (in which case it is called a starting price) or in races, particularly horse races.
As the name suggests, a person could win based on his odds of winning. So, for instance, a bookmarker calculates the initial odds of winning, and you want to bet for something else, then you declare the odds on which you will be betting your money. If the odds are positive, and you win, then it is said that you will have gotten the “best of it”; if you lose, you will have gotten the “worst of it”. The latter type of bet is the one a person is said to have to avoid, although because of the element of chance, there is no specific strategy that can be used to be able to avoid making a bad bet. There is a third type of a bet, which is a lay bet, which is a bet for something not to happen. For instance, if you lay a bet on a particular horse in a horse race, that means you bet that that horse will lose the race.
There are three types of odds that are offered and generally accepted: the American odds or the moneyline odds, the fractional odds, and the decimal odds. The first two – the fractional and the decimal – work the same way in that the relationship between the possible winnings and the bet is given. Their only difference is how they are expressed – as the name suggests, fractional and decimal odds express the odds in fractional and decimal forms, respectively. The decimals tend to be more exact than the fractional odds though, and so they are more commonly used in betting exchanges than the latter odds. The third type of odds, the moneyline odds, is commonly used in the United States, which in turn gave its name to that type of odds. It quotes not in terms of fractions or decimals, but in terms of positives or negatives. For example, a quote of ¼ in the fractional odds will be expressed in moneyline odds as -$400, which is a negative odd. This means that a person needs to bet $400 in order to win $100. On the other side of things, if the odds are 4/1 or $400, then that means a person stands to win $400 for that wager, and that is a positive odd.
