Parimutuel Betting

Parimutuel betting is the type of betting commonly used in sporting events and races and has rather easy mechanics. It is quite like fixed-odds betting with one major difference – in fixed-odds, the payout is determined early on; whereas in parimutuel betting, the payout is only determined after everyone has placed in their bets, and the betting is closed. This has something to do with the way parimutuel betting works. The following is the very basic structure – other events have bigger money at stake, and therefore, more complicated systems of calculation:  First, all wagers are placed, and then when the event begins the betting is closed. The taxes and the percentage of the house is then deducted from the pot, and then those who bet wait for the result of the event. Every outcome has an equivalent amount of money wagered, which will be used as the divisor for the total pot money in order to be able to determine how much a person is getting for every dollar that he bet on that choice.Parimutuel Betting

This type of betting first came into the scene in 1867, thanks to a man named Joseph Oller., the same man who built the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. There are many bet types that you can place in a parimutuel betting system, and some of those types we are all familiar with: for example, in a horse race, when one says win, then the person must be successful in betting for the winning horse; when one says place, the person must successfully bet on a horse that places either first or second; and show, when a person successfully bets on a horse that places either first, second, or third. There are more types available, and these types vary on where you are betting and what their rules are, but these three are almost present all the time. The element of chance, combined with the taxes, the house’s take, and another person’s capabilities to predict the outcome of an event, all make winning big money difficult for people who engage in this form of gambling, but it is not impossible as long as you have the skills and luck on your side.
